Duke English invites you to a reading and book signing by award-winning novelist and educator Marlon James. (Gothic Bookshops will have copies of his novels available for purchase) Marlon James won the 2015 Man Booker Prize for A Brief History of Seven Killings, making him the first Jamaican author to take home the United Kingdom's most prestigious liter¬ary award. James was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1970. He graduated from the Univer¬sity of the West Indies with a degree in Language and Literature and earned his Masters in Creative Writing from Wilkes University in Pennsylvania. He lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and teaches English and creative writing at Macalester College. In 2018 Marlon James received an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award in Literature. In April 2019, he was named one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2019 in the Pioneers category. James' latest novel, Moon Witch, Spider King, reflects the author's ever-evolving process and love of African mythology. It is the second book in his "Dark Star" trilogy. James often addresses topics related to writing and the writing process, issues on the history of the Caribbean, race and gender in the U.S. and U.K., and youth subcultures expressed in literature and music such as hip-hop and reggae. Marlon James will write and produce Get Millie Black, a 6-part crime drama set in Jamaica, for movie channel HBO and UK's Channel 4. This event is funded by the Schiff Family in memory of Reynolds Price. (This event is open to the general public, and FREE parking will be available in the Campus Drive parking lot across the street from the Ruby Lounge.)
