In investing, return is short for "return on your investment" and means how much profit you made from the investment. If you spend $1,000 to buy one hundred shares for a share price of $10 and the price increases to $15, you can then sell the shares for $1,500 and you will have made a pretax return of $500 (or 50%) on your $1,000. Investors are always searching for investments that provide the highest returns.
