Rent is the money you pay to a landlord for living in his apartment or house. Usually you pay rent every month until the lease expires (usually after 12 months), at which time you may leave. The rent may or may not cover all the utilities, depending on the terms of the lease. Rent is also paid by businesses that lease space from a building owner. Rent is also a word used to describe what a renter is doing - for example, "Jane decided that she would rent the apartment she looked at last night; her rent payments will be $750 a month, which includes water and gas but not electricity."
