Medigap is the name given to private health insurance that is intended to supplement the coverage provided by the basic Medicare health insurance program by filling in some of the "gaps" in the Medicare program. Some of these gaps, which arise from expenses not covered by Medicare, might include co-insurance, co-payments, and deductibles. Even though Medigap insurance is offered by private insurance companies, the insurance policies they issue must follow federal government and state government guidelines. There are several types of Medigap policies offered, each covering slightly different areas and each identified by a letter. Medigap polices only cover one person: spouses must typically each buy separate polices.
