Medicare is a federal government program for health insurance that generally covers people who are 65 years old or older, but can also cover people of any age who have permanent kidney failure, and certain younger people with disabilities regardless of their age. There are four basic parts to Medicare: A) hospital insurance, which is paid for by the Medicare tax; B) medical insurance; C) Medicare Advantage Plans - similar to HMOs or PPOs; and D) prescription drug coverage. There may be a premium charged for parts B, C, and D. See also Medicaid, Medigap, and Social Security.
