This is a federal tax form you can use when you file your taxes that is a simpler form than Form 1040. This is the form you can generally use (for 2010 tax returns) if your taxable income is under $100,000. However, as a general guideline you cannot use this form - and so must use Form 1040 - if you have self-employment income or if you have income from the sale of property. If you use this form you typically cannot itemize any tax deductions other than IRA contributions or interest payable on student loans. In addition, you can only use a limited number of tax credits. There is an even simpler tax form, Form 1040EZ.
