This is the general name for an organization that collects money from the public and then either invests it in things like stocks and bonds or uses the money to make loans. Financial institutions that pay interest back to the people who give them money are called "depository" institutions (for example: banks, savings and loans, and credit unions). There are also "nondepository" financial institutions, such as insurance companies, which collect money by selling insurance policies.
