Automobile Insurance

This is insurance that you buy when you have a car. There are two main types of auto insurance: (1) comprehensive and collision; and (2) liability insurance, which can include medical payments insurance and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Most states require that some level of auto liability insurance be bought. Typically, automobile insurance follows the car. In other words, the policy covers events arising out of the use of the car listed in the policy. There will usually be one or possibly two named drivers who are deemed to be the principal drivers; other drivers may also be listed on the policy. Residents in the same household as the owner must usually be listed on the policy. Occasionally, unnamed drivers are allowed to drive with the owner's permission. See also Insurance ID Card.
